Why are UK plugs 3-pin?
The UK isn't the only country to have 3-pin plugs. The third pin on the plug is to provide a safe path for any stray dangerous voltage to conduct to ground, causing the circuit breaker to trip or the fuse to blow, disconnecting the power for safety reasons.
